SundayX I'm sharing my response to a comment I received on another platform.
For sensitivity reasons I'm not sharing the comment.
The person was not celebratory but was absolutely uncouth.
It's socially unacceptable and universally understood not to be an a*s towards those that mourn.
Additionally, I personally believe it's not wise to speak ill of the dead.
They are no longer here to defend themselves.
Plus, I just think it's overall bad jou jou.
Someone very wise and insightful reminded me that empathy isn't conditional.
Ironically, as a result of reprehensible behavior publicly citing his exercising of his freedom of expression many are finding themselves unemployed.
As a firm supporter of the First Amendment I feel we all could be at risk of losing this freedom or having it severely restricted because of this instance and tragic loss of Charlie.
Just look at the UK if you need an example.
My reply to that person is in the post that follows:
As stated, I do have empathy for Charlie and his family.
Empathy is the fuel for compassion to take action.
Humanity is lost if people are unable to have empathy and compassion for one another.
We got to this point by everyone forcing their beliefs on each other and demanding their way refusing to find common ground.
Nobody wants beliefs forced on them yet many don't have a problem being the one to force theirs on others.
I'm speaking to both sides here, not just one.
I've been an Independent voter for a while.
For years now I've watched both sides toss the same old hateful memegrenades back and forth at each other. I'm not proud of it but I used to toss them too back in the day.
One day I woke up and realized it profited absolutely nothing and in fact contributes to the divide and strife.
How many of us were raised on “If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all” ?
That doesn't mean don't speak up for change but I think we're all learning together there's a better way to speak up instead of infighting. We have processes in place to engage as constituents instead of mass heaping of vitriol online.
I have empathy for child victims and their families traumatized by school shootings. I grieve every school shooting and every child lost because of this senseless violence.
However, I don't believe the answer is taking guns away from responsible gun owners.
I also have a great deal of empathy for Iryna Zarurska, the young Ukrainian immigrant who was brutally stabbed on the bus with a knife — (a knife.)
To infer because a person stands for one thing they must automatically support everything that goes with it reveals lack of critical thinking.
We each see ourselves and nuanced individuals yet don't seem to be able to understand everyone else is too.
Real genuine discussions need to occur and a common ground found with cool heads at the table. Name calling is not contributory to meaningful dialogue and I won't participate.
As I've stated in my earlier comments, I may not agree with Charlie on all of his points of view, I wasn't his demographic and haven't listened to a lot of what he said. I do however 100% support his constitutional right to freedom of expression. Just like I support your right to free speech with your comment even though I don't see things like you do.
I also didn't know Charlie personally and I'm pretty sure you didn't either.
I can only speculate how you formed your opinion. It's a shame he isn't here to respond to you. He would certainly give you the presence to do so based on what I'm seeing.
The bottom line is, he had the same freedom of expression you do.
I'm not one to speak ill of the dead myself.
There's a ton of youth that see him differently.
He didn't deserve what happened to him.
To celebrate what happened to him is reprehensible.
We really have to quit dehumanizing each other.
And no, I don't think every Democrat I know is celebrating this senseless act.
This shouldn't even have to be stated.
I'm well aware many on the left have empathy for him and his family.
I know some good people on both sides of the aisle and have nothing but love for all of them.
Violence is not the answer.
Not for the left.
Not for the right.
I love our country but we have serious problems.
I'm praying for it's healing.
I'm not telling anyone how to think, just relating how I see things.
Can a bird fly with only one wing?
Be well, _______.
This is a good time to thank men and women in uniform who serve and have served our country.
Because of them we have this freedom of speech and right now we are at risk of losing this freedom along with our humanity.
Logging off socials for awhile.
